Blanc is a two channel video installation that presents a series of brief portraits of women gesturing toward the camera/viewer. Although punctuated by moments of white, this sequence of moving imagery is rhythmic and unyielding. Each dispossessed subject is engaged in a similar moment – a turn, a glance – all invisibly common within the original cinematic context from which it is drawn. Blanc is the first installment of a video trilogy, entitled Les Documents, that uses segments of footage appropriated from film and television to explore associations, implications and semiotics relating to a common cinematic gesture. The work activates our existing relationship with the moving picture in entertainment and amplifies the populist recognition of stereotypical situations and roles inhabited by females. Characterized by heavy manipulation and drastic reframing, the images and accompanying soundscape, articulate an atmosphere of anxiety and destabilization – serving to create a new encounter with our memory and expectations of the filmic genres.
The artist would like to acknowledge Le Laboratoire d’art and Pine Needle Blankets Productions for production support in the realization of this project.
