<span style="font-family: "pigiarniq"; font-size: 10pt;">Ice Spider <span style="font-family: "pigiarniq"; font-size: 10pt;">is a collaboration between Saimaiyu Akesuk (Cape Dorset, Nunavut) and Cheryl Rondeau (Toronto, Canada). Inspired by Akesuk’s iconic drawing entitled Red Spider (2014), this experimental short employs the technique of stop-motion animation while making reference to the actual behaviour of the Arctic Wolf Spider, a genus of arachnid common across the North. Climate change has resulted in larger populations and increased predatory tendencies of this carnivorous and cannibalistic spider. This sci-fi-influenced short animates the growing discourse around the ecological, political and cultural future of Canada’s Arctic. Background imagery was shot on location in Cape Dorset, Nunavut.

encircling those environs which comprise the community of Parkdale in Toronto
(Canada). Recorded during several early-morning bicycle journeys and using
three video cameras – one on either end of the handlebar and one on a helmet –
this route follows the neighbourhood’s bordering roads and pathways. The
resulting three-channel looped video is a snaking portrait of Parkdale’s frontiers,
which contains a notoriously diverse cultural and socio-economic population.
The act of tracking its boundaries initiates a poignant consideration of
geopolitics and civic dynamics while framing the notion of community as both
navigable site and elusive principle.

environments. In this series, the focus of my investigation is the gesture of
falling and I’ve made myself the subject of this study. These interventions, capture a moment of collision wherein
culminates the forces of gravity, balance, judgment and fate. But aside from
that complex negotiation, I am also fascinated by a counterpoint of simplicity
and drama inherent to this gesture. The fall is unexpected, uncontrolled and
potentially harrowing in its loss of control but can also be embarrassing and
even liberating. Using this gesture, I aim to build a space in which the viewer
experiences a sense of anxiety, by evoking the body’s frailty and vulnerability,
while simultaneously heightening its absurdity through serial repetition.

the Route (Art Spin 08/2012) is a nine-channel video projection created for Art Spin's bicycle art tour and annual exhibition. Using their proposed route for their August 2012 bicycle tour of art galleries, artist studios and performances. I cycled it three times while recording my experience from three different perspectives, and, at three different times of the day (7:30, 13:30 and 19:30).

The projection was accompanied by a handout that provided details on cycling the route.
investigates and dissects the sub-textual codification of the female form
evidenced within mainstream cinema. Rondeau has culled hours of footage from
Science Fiction films; an archive that is both rich in imagery relating to the
strength of female protagonists and, at the same time, preoccupied with the
spectacle of the female body mapped, through probing, prodding and
manipulation. In both circumstances, there is an integral dialectic of the
macabre and the sexualized wrapped in a vocabulary authentic to the Sci-Fi - a
genre, to a large extent, built on concepts of gender bias, objectification,
titillation and colonization.
solid yet malleable, hermetic but porous. These female protagonists are
extracted from their original context, liberated from a cinematic matrix and
free to weave and transform between and within each other, blurring the
boundaries between self and other. These short vignettes are digitally
manipulated and rhythmic, punctuated by moments of black and underscored by an
immersive soundtrack.

-----
2011 video projection
This video projection piece is a mesmerizing view of one bike commuter’s journey between home and work. The monotony of repetition is played out through the interweaving and multiplication of both time-lapse photography and video recorded from the perspective of the handlebars of this same commuter bike. The data for this installation was collected over numerous weeks. This work provides a study of the body, and the individual, propelling herself through space exploring issues around embodiment, the production of space and subjectivity.
Revisiting these frontiers and boundaries in an effort to examine the transition from then to now and old to new; I remap a configuration of the old Village of Port Credit, physically linking it with the various communities and requisite components that eventually comprise Port Credit as it is now known. The project mines history, embeds the former within the current geography and thus emphasizes a process of ongoing change. I have created a map with proposed route details - including statistical information and historical references - that will be available gratis to visitors of the exhibition.
With Elusive Body, Cheryl Rondeau takes the viewer on a simulated journey into an environment that oscillates between the parallels of real and construct. This installation is a dual channel video projected onto screens suspended within the exhibition space.
The two projections feature different, yet linked, vignettes that mix footage from two disparate sources: found footage culled from Science Fiction films and original recordings captured from the handle-bars of a bicycle during an earlier performative intervention by Rondeau. The found footage comprises several brief portraits of superhuman female protagonists in action or combat. The handlebar recordings document a one-week period, via video and time-lapse photography, of the artist’s mundane bicycle commute from residence to studio. During this cycling exercise, Rondeau recorded her fluctuating heart rate, speed and cadence in an effort to capture a constantly shifting algorithm that she then used to determine the sequence, editing and pacing of both vignettes. What emerges from these calculations is a frantic aesthetic and radical reframing of the original imagery. Unexpected, fleeting, incomplete – this sequence of isolated moments resists conventional cinematic storytelling and immerses the viewer in its soundscape. Rondeau presents a series of complications, incidents or anticipations that move from depicting an embattled Sci-Fi heroine to someone real on bicycle, a resonance of Hollywood-esque protagonist and, if not mundane, Toronto artist herself.
Cheryl Rondeau is a visual artist who works with both still and moving imagery to transform moments of transition and the quotidian into the monumental with the intent of exposing the influences and mechanics that mediate representation and identity. Her work has been included in exhibitions and festivals internationally.
For The Commute:A portrait of the body in movement I’ve decided to document – using video, photo and text – my cycling commutes from home to work during a one-week period (Monday to Friday). This commute takes me from downtown Toronto to Kettleby (a place just north of the city) which is about 46.5 km each way. During this week I will upload and catalogue my documentation and collected data to the Elusive Body blog site including GPS information and my body's vital stats. With each day's log viewers encounter detailed route maps with accompanying graphs representing my heart rate, cadence and speed fluctuations along with elevation statistics. The data collected will be analyzed and used in my work – as a means of creating video montages that mix found footage and source material collected during my cycling commutes. The sequencing, editing and pacing of these montages will be the result of a calculation based on my fluctuating heart rate, speed and cadence.
The Elusive Body blog is the first stage of a multimedia installation scheduled to open April 2010 at Forty Seven Gallery. Actually I could go on forever with this project. I decided on a hundred in
order to have an end and to have enough portraits
to create this feeling of repetition and destabilization. Through this
repetition of so many women performing a similar gesture, as well as blowing
them up and manipulating them digitally in the editing process, I am attempting
to abstract this gesture, to denaturalize it, create a disconnect with its
implied meaning. By focusing on a very specific micro-gesture and extracting it
completely from its original context I am interested in showing its absurdity
when devoid of content. In a sense I am taking to its extreme Judith Butler’s
theory of gender performativity where
she describes repetition of certain behaviours and gestures as integral to the
naturalization of sex and gender differences. My interest is in isolating these
gestures and exposing their meanings as constructs. Actually Eclipse is the third video in a trilogy
that isolates a number of gestures. The first one Blanc focuses on the toss of the female head as it turns toward the

similar concerns. Embedded in its very origins: what gesture could be more
endlessly repetitive than the pedaling of a bicycle; the lone figure of a woman

you should ask . . . I think that every art student goes through the sex phase
– might be on film, tape, canvas or often a performance – something of a right

my own erotic heights. I was studying photography and video at the time.
Unfortunately I’m generally uncomfortable in front of the camera. I remember
reviewing the footage and discovering it to be so flat and subtle. I suppose
the way every-day sex actually looks. My homemade stuff just didn’t look right
– no pitches and valleys, clever camera work or exaggerated panting and
squealing. I remember lamenting that without the technical resources, staging

think those moments of female facial expressions in porn are under-watched or
else the porn director would not think they were important enough to include
them in the final product. I remember one female masturbation scene in
particular, it was in a shower and she was using a vibrator. The camera was
initially focused on her genitalia and her breasts yet these close up shots
were interlaced with long shots of her face and upper body. As she became more
excited the camera focused almost exclusively on her face to the point where
all we saw when she reached orgasm was a close up of her face, eyes closed,
teeth biting her lips and deep moans of pleasure.

CR: Do you
mean a difference in how female orgasm looks in relation to men, or in relation
to other women? In relation to men I think there is an integral difference. A
man’s orgasm is external; the evidence is oh, so obvious visually by his
swollen member and the very demonstrative ejaculation. Why divert the camera to
his face when he is at the point of ejaculating? In relation to other women I
think there are subtle differences but ultimately since a woman’s moment of
ecstasy is internal she needs to externalize her pleasure in order to provide
something for the camera. Hence there is a certain iconic gesture that it seems
all women mimic and it is this throwing back of the head. An interesting aside,
having watched in slow motion the capturing of this moment in extreme close up
the woman’s face disappears to expose her neck, throat protruding. These images
have stuck with me as being incredibly phallic.

certain degree yes . . . hell where did I learn to do that but through watching
porn. As I mentioned there is an expectation, if only for the camera, that
women need to outwardly express their moment of ecstasy. After all, the
director needs something to work with and show the audience that women do enjoy
and want whatever is being done to
them. A part of the male pleasure is ‘knowing’ he is able to make the woman get
off.

CR: I think
this fear comes from the fact that a woman’s ecstasy is internal and hence an
intensely personal and inward moment of intense pleasure. In the case of this
guy he may have felt excluded from her pleasure, removed from the experience.
Her eyes closed, head pushed back, it is like she is far, far away communing
with something, or someone, otherworldly as opposed to communing with him and
his orgasm. I am reminded of Caravaggio’s painting of Mary Magdalen in Ecstasy.
Caravaggio has painted her alone with a stream of light descending on her face,
head rolled back and eyes half closed. This painting represents her communion
with God. It portrays an ecstatic moment that fluctuates between mystical and
carnal love, and where her lover’s presence is irrelevant.

the difference is as much in the filming and editing of these moments as it is
in the level of acting. Ultimately
these two types of porn are made for very different reasons and thus what is
captured, or what is focused on, is not the same. As for professional hardcore
there is a crew of professionals, and the ultimate intent is to make a product
for distribution and sale. With amateur porn, I sense more an interest in the
exhibitionism of the “actors” as opposed to creating a finished product for an audience.
I find the camera angles are different and there seems to be less close-ups in
amateur porn so female ecstasy is portrayed somewhat differently, if at all.

Taking as a point of departure an intervention realized in June 2007 where the artist cycled over 1600 km between Venice, Basel, Kassel and Muenster attended the opening days of each of four international artistic events the project seeks to create a non-linear, fragmentary travelogue. En route, Rondeau documented (using still photography, video and blog) her experiences. These documents were uploaded daily to World Wide WARC web site. A virtual space hosted by Women’s Art Resource Centre in Toronto. Drawing on both original video, photo and ephemera collected during the Art Ride intervention along with found footage from popular culture Deviations is a psychological mapping of the artist’s emotional and economic ups and downs while in transit between four cultural events of global profile.
English version follows ...

------
In response to the opening of two major cultural events in Sudbury, within days of each other - Fair of Alternative Art Sudbury (FAAS) and Salon du Livre du Grand Sudbury - Cheryl Rondeau will realize an intervention that continues her exploration of the intersection between the artworld and the everyday. From 3 to 6 May 2008, she will conduct an expedition by bicycle of approximately 600 km from Toronto to Sudbury – symbolically and physically linking the Ontario’s anglophone and francophone cultural centres. Upon arrival in Sudbury, this endurance initiative will culminate in a tour of the FAAS exhibition sites and Salon du Livre.
Loaded with randonneur equipment, cameras and notebook, Rondeau will endeavour to log her trouvailles and map out her parcours. Using video and time-lapse imagery to record the geography of the experience and the multiplicity of interstitial spaces between these two cultural spaces.
The public is invited to join the artist in real space or virtually. The Routes for each stage of the tour will be published in advance on the internet inviting those interested in participating to join the project. The public is invited to ride alongside the artist and at any stage and for any length of distance. For those on the internet, Rondeau will share daily experiences by uploading visual and textual elements on to her blog.
Physical endurance will form a central theme of the project. The use of the body in the artist’s displacement, its emphatic integration in the terrain, proposes a questioning of our perceptions of time and space in a world constantly shrinking within the virtual realm of cyberspace and ever-increasing air travel. Borders and geography are collapsed, disappearing from our collective memory. With this physical and virtual intervention Cheryl Rondeau pursues an investigation of the relationships between space and the body, gesture and the individual as well as the rupture between lived experience and its representation, so as to see and think differently.
Cheryl Rondeau would like to thank Rachelle Bergeron, William Huffman, Maria Legault, Joseph Mansourian, Monique Mathew, Darlene Naponse, Niki Naponse, Nicole Poulin, Guylaine Tousignant, Danielle Tremblay, le Salon du Livre du Grand Sudbury, Pine Needle Blankets Productions et la Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario.
Eclipse is a two channel, video loop, installation and presents a series of brief portraits of women in the throes of ecstasy, all taken from erotic films. These short vignettes are rhythmic and fleeting, dissolving into each other.
Eclipse is the final installment of a video trilogy, entitled Les Documents, that uses segments of footage appropriated from film and television to explore associations, implications and semiotics relating to a common cinematic gesture. The work activates our existing relationship with the moving picture in entertainment and amplifies the populist recognition of stereotypical situations and roles inhabited by females. Characterized by heavy manipulation and drastic reframing, the images and accompanying soundscape, articulate an atmosphere of anxiety and destabilization – serving to create a new encounter with our memory and expectations of the filmic genres.
The artist would like to acknowledge the Ontario Arts Council, Le Laboratoire d’art and Pine Needle Blankets Productions for production support in the realization of this project.
-----
